External Transfer Students
External Transfer students are not current University of Maryland students who are looking to transfer to UMD and declare business as one of their intended majors.
While you may have started your college education at another university, we are thrilled you're considering the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Admission to the University of Maryland and the Smith School of Business allows you to pursue one of our eight majors. In addition, you’ll have full access to dedicated Smith advising, our suite of Fellows Programs, our Business Honors program, and the Smith Office of Career Services.
Students applying to the University of Maryland from other institutions apply to LEPs through the general application for admission to the University by indicating their major of interest. Students are first reviewed for admission to the University, and then, if admitted, are reviewed for admission to Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) majors based on LEP standards.
Direct Admission
- Applicants admitted to the University who have earned 45 credits, successfully completed all required Gateway courses, and have a 3.600 or higher cumulative grade point average across all attempted college coursework will be directly admitted into the Business major and receive their admission decision in April for fall admission and October for spring admission.
- Applicants admitted to the University who are in the process of completing the required Gateway courses, accumulating 45 credits, and/or have below a 3.600 cumulative grade point average across all attempted college coursework at the time of their application will be reviewed after the semester has ended and final grades for the semester have been calculated. In this final review, applicants who have successfully completed all the LEP Gateway requirements and have a 3.600 or higher cumulative grade point average across all attempted college coursework will be directly admitted into the Business major. Students should be sure to send their final transcript from their previous institution to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions if they are taking classes at the time of application to be considered for direct admission or the competitive review process described below.
Competitive Review
Applicants admitted to the University who are in the process of completing the required Gateway courses, accumulating 45 credits, and/or have below a 3.600 cumulative grade point average across all attempted college coursework at the time of their application will be reviewed after the semester has ended and final grades for the semester have been calculated. Students should be sure to send their final transcript from their previous institution to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions if they are taking classes at the time of application to be considered for admission in the competitive review process.
Applicants admitted to the University who have successfully completed the required gateway requirements listed below, including having a minimum grade point average of 3.000 in all college coursework, will undergo a competitive review for admission to the Business major based on space available after applicants with a 3.600 or higher GPA have been admitted.
If the Smith School of Business has filled its available transfer slots with applicants who have earned a 3.600 or higher cumulative grade point average across all attempted college coursework, no additional applicants will be admitted through a competitive admissions review process, and no additional LEP applications to the Smith School will be accepted in future semesters.
Gateway Requirements
- Completion of BMGT220 [Principles of Accounting I] with a minimum grade of C-
- Completion of BMGT230 or BMGT231 [Business Statistics] (or approved substitute course) with a minimum grade of C-
- Completion of MATH120, 136 or 140 [Applied Calculus I or Calculus I] with a minimum grade of C- or above
- Applicant must have earned at least 45 cumulative credits by the end of the semester in which the application has been submitted
- A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in all college coursework is required for consideration for all internal and external transfer applicants
- Students applying to Business who have completed all of the LEP Gateway requirements and have a 3.6 or higher cumulative grade point average across all attempted college coursework will be directly admitted into the Business major. Students applying to Business, who have completed all of the LEP Gateway requirements and have a 3.0 - 3.599 cumulative grade point average across all attempted college coursework, will undergo a competitive review for admission to the Business major.
The following courses are approved substitutes for BMGT230: BIOM301, CCJS200, ECON230, ECON321, EDMS451, EPIB300, EPIB315, GEOG306, HLTH300, INST314, PSYC200, and SOCY201.
The following courses are approved substitutes for BMGT231: BIOE372, ENCE302, ENEE324, ENME392, STAT400, or STAT420.
The following guidelines pertain to all Limited Enrollment Programs:
- Only one gateway or performance review course may be repeated to earn the required grade and that course may only be repeated once. When more than one course can satisfy a gateway requirement, taking a second course from the list will count as a repeat. Please note that a grade of "W" is considered an attempt and must be repeated.
- Students may apply once to an LEP.
- Students who were directly admitted and fail to meet the performance review criteria will be dismissed from the major and may not reapply.
- Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 after admission to an LEP. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the major.
- Any student denied admission or dismissed from the major may appeal in writing to the individual LEP.
Transfer Students may use the Transfer Credit Services Database of Course Evaluations to determine how past, current or future courses may transfer to the University of Maryland.

Apply
Here’s how to apply directly to the Smith School of Business:
- Start the University of Maryland online application.
- Mark “Business” or one of our eight academic majors (accounting, finance, information systems, international business, management, marketing, operations management or supply chain management) as your intended major. If you do not indicate business as your intended major, you will not be considered for direct admission to the Smith School of Business.
Deadlines
- Students seeking Fall admission: March 1 (priority deadline); June 1 (regular deadline)
- Students seeking Spring admission: August 1 (priority deadline); November 15 (regular deadline)
Students who have completed the requirements before applying will be notified of their admissions decision within a month of the deadline. Students who complete the requirements later will be notified after the semester is finished.
