Tutoring at Smith

The Smith School is partnering with Knack, a peer-to-peer tutoring platform that connects you with fellow Smith students who’ve taken the same courses! You can meet with a tutor in person at the Undergraduate Student Lounge or one of our Open Learning Spaces — or go online in a virtual classroom using the Knack platform. With flexible hours and options that fit your schedule, academic support has never been easier to access.

How much do tutors get paid?

Smith tutors are paid $15.00 per hour and will be paid through their Knack account. The Tutoring is free for students who use it.

How many hours a week are tutors allowed to work?

Smith tutors are allowed to work up to 15 hours per week.

How do students and tutor get paired up?

Students use the Knack website or mobile app to submit a request for a tutor. Qualified Smith peer tutor will be notified about this request. Tutors review the details and message the student with an offer to help on the platform. If the student wants to engage with the tutor, they will message the tutor to determine a time and date to meet in person or online.

Does Knack provide tutor training?

Knack provides initial mandatory 2 hour training for tutors and additional training is offered if tutors want to continue their education and strengthen their professional skills.

What safety protections are in place for tutors and those receiving tutoring?

All tutoring occurs online or in public areas like the Undergraduate student lounge and our open learning spaces. Students and tutors communicate through the Knack website or app, so they do not need to share personal contact information such as email addresses or phone numbers. When students schedule sessions, they are prompted to confirm awareness of safety recommendations and agreement with Knacks and UMD guidelines. More safety tips are in Knack’s Safety Help Article.
