Welcome from the Director

Welcome! Our doctoral programs at the University of Maryland Smith School of Business are a collaborative, research-oriented community of scholars. While the purpose of our website is to provide a convenient summary of our program requirements, admissions and application, we hope that you also get a glimpse at our amazing students and supportive expert faculty.

Our ultimate goal is to train and develop students to become thought leaders! The coursework, research papers, and assistantship collaboration all contribute to preparing students for the tenure-track faculty positions at highly research-active universities. The hallmark of our program is our mentoring. Our students work with junior and senior faculty to advance their novel ideas into published research in top field journals and learn to be innovative in the classroom. Our faculty are highly invested in the promotion of our students throughout the program and even throughout their careers as faculty at other universities. Our alumni are generous with their time, expertise, and collaboration as they often co-author publications, present at our speaker series, and support and network at the major conferences. Our faculty, doctoral alumni and doctoral students collectively contribute to the discovery and dissemination of scientific knowledge in academics.

While the program is small relative to the size of the Smith School as a whole, our faculty, doctoral students, and doctoral alumni form a community. We are proud to have a very strong Association of Doctoral Students (ADS), which provides a variety of social opportunities for doctoral students, faculty and doctoral alumni to interact and build relationships. This supportive community of Smith scholars creates an environment of curiosity, passion, inspiration and boldness which is conducive to high levels of quality research.
