Financial Support

Every student admitted to the PhD program is eligible to receive financial support in the form of graduate assistantships. The application has questions about financial assistance. Additionally, the Smith School requests that students who believe that they can finance their own education should complete the supplementary application. All applications will be reviewed the same regardless of financial support.

All students must pay the mandatory fees regulated by the University of Maryland Bursar's Office. Mandatory fees are charged on a tiered system of registered credits. Because coursework should be completed in 2 years, students will have to register for the maximum credits and pay the higher mandatory fee tier for 4 semesters. However, in years 3, 4, and 5, students should have completed all coursework and paid the lower tier of fees. International students are required to pay the international student fee each semester, set by the International Student and Scholar Service.

The Smith PhD program operates with the standard tuition rates set by the University of Maryland Bursar's Office.

Research Stipend

In addition to the salary as a graduate assistant, students will have a $1,500 research spending ceiling account. This is replenished each year contingent upon satisfactory progress in the program. These funds can be used for research-related purchases and travel costs associated with research and conferences only.

The Smith School PhD program may offer additional fellowships as part of the above graduate assistantship. Advanced PhD students may also self-nominate for Graduate School awards and fellowships. Additionally, PhD students at the University of Maryland are also encouraged to compete for national awards such as those offered by AACSB, GMAC, AAUW, and private foundations.
