18 Maryland Smith Professors Named Among Top 2% Worldwide

A study of the world’s top researchers identifies 18 from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business in the top 2% of the most-cited scholars and scientists worldwide.

The study, published in the journal PLoS Biology, looks at 22 scientific fields and 176 subfields and ranks researchers for their career-long impact by the number of times their work is cited in other research. The research was led by Stanford University, based on data from Elsevier’s Scopus, an abstract and citation database of research publications.

“The intellectual power at Smith is just amazing,” says Maryland Smith Dean Prabhudev Konana, who joined the school in January 2021. “The faculty is one of the school’s greatest strengths and was a big draw for me. Having so many of our faculty among the top in the world shows that the research happening here is relevant, important work that continues to have broad influence.”

At Maryland Smith, 17 current and emeritus faculty researchers made the ranked list, along with one deceased faculty member, whose work at the business school continues to be widely cited:
