How can we, as a society, better endure crises of all varieties?

Center for Global Business at UMD’s Robert H. Smith School of Business to Host Second Annual Event Recognizing Maryland-based Global Businesses for Innovative Pandemic-Era Pivots.

For the second year, the Center for Global Business at Maryland Smith, the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington, and the Florida International University’s Center for International Business Education and Research partnered to facilitate the Ace the Case Global Business Challenge.

Embassy Day, a two-part event of the Smith Start experience and the first introduction to a global mindset as a Maryland Smith student, invites freshmen and transfer students to meet diplomatic representatives in embassies throughout Washington, D.C., and to learn more about the respective countries. This year, 15 countries participated and met virtually with over 100 students.

The race to quantum computing, rises in water dislocation and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) going mainstream may not seem like typical business concerns. But businesses will have an important role to play in managing these global trends, says Erik Peterson, partner and managing director at Kearney.

This spring, 19 exchange students from seven of Maryland Smith’s partner universities are in College Park for their semester-long study abroad experience.

At Maryland Smith, impactful learning isn’t confined to the classroom – it’s happening everywhere.

In the fall of 2021, Maryland Smith’s Center for Global Business partnered with three Maryland companies on the Maryland Global Consulting Program. This program is an opportunity that offers Maryland-based companies the chance to work with a team of the school’s MBA or undergraduate students to address challenges companies are facing in entering the international market.

Students returned to in-person classrooms this fall, but one Maryland Smith class broke the boundaries of geography by collaborating (virtually) with students from Elisava University School, the Design and Engineering College of Universitat de Vic, Spain.

This fall, the Center for Global Business (CGB) partnered with three companies to bring live cases into the classroom. These cases, presented by Ellicott Dredges, United Source One, and Get Real Health, gave students the opportunity to apply their knowledge to a practical challenge while learning about the complexity of international business.
