Imagine beginning your workday with an email inbox that was nearly empty, and ending it in a Zen-like perfect state of emptiness. It’s the idea, of course, behind Inbox Zero, the meticulous email management system aimed at keeping the inbox message-free.

He has invested almost 45 years teaching, earning eight academic degrees, including three doctorates, and publishing 35 books and more than 300 academic and practitioner-oriented articles. Yet, H. Kent Baker, MBA ’69, DBA ’72, MEd ’74, says it isn’t yet time for retirement – not, he says, until he can no longer take the stairs to his office at American University.

Attendees at Maryland sporting events always have plenty of stars to watch on the playing field or court, but since Fall 2021, when fans reemerged from the pandemic lockdown, there’s been a colorful new one rising in the stands. Thomas Canary, a graduate student who finished his B.S. in marketing in December, wears his Maryland pride in the form of a flashy yellow, red, black and white suit adorned with a Maryland flag pattern. It’s a wardrobe decision that has earned him the nickname “Flag Suit Guy” and could propel him into the ranks of campus student legends like the mellow “Pan Flute Guy” or the palm-slapping, BMX bike-riding “High Five Guy.”

In the fall of 2021, Maryland Smith’s Center for Global Business partnered with three Maryland companies on the Maryland Global Consulting Program. This program is an opportunity that offers Maryland-based companies the chance to work with a team of the school’s MBA or undergraduate students to address challenges companies are facing in entering the international market.

Commencement, no matter its form, is a moment of pride, accomplishment and celebration. It’s a moment, in the words of undergraduate student speaker Juliet Jack, to see opportunity.
