Smith Study Selected for Part of $3M in Seed Grants for Collaborative Research

A study co-led by Maryland Smith’s Ritu Agarwal to improve clinical decision making in the treatment of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome has been selected among projects for $3 million in new grants through the University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: MPowering the State (MPower) to address “critical areas of paramount importance to the state and the nation.”

MPower – a formal collaboration of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and UMD – is awarding $249,000 for “Precision Therapy for Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS)” by Agarwal, Distinguished University Professor and Robert H. Smith Dean’s Chair of Information Systems, and Amber Beitelshees of the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Their project was selected as among five studies in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Medicine. The other targeted areas are Cybersecurity and Homeland Security; Neuroscience and Aging; Pandemic Readiness, Resilience and Mitigation; Racial and Social Justice; and Violence and Crime Reduction.

“These seed grant awards highlight the outstanding interdisciplinary and high-impact research faculty in Baltimore and College Park are conducting to address the most complex challenges society is facing,” said Gregory F. Ball, vice president for research at UMB and UMCP in an announcement of the grants “My hope is that these grants strengthen current collaborations, promote new ones and lead to future funding opportunities to support innovative and transformative research.”

Agarwal, founding director of the Center for Health Information and Decision Systems (CHIDS), has published more than 100 papers in top academic journals and testified before government agencies, including the U.S. Department of Health. She has collaborated with Fortune 500 companies such as Cisco Systems, Johnson & Johnson, and Pfizer, and recently completed a six-year term as editor-in-chief of Information Systems Research, one of the world’s top academic journals in information systems.
