Smith Invitational Case Competition
The Smith Invitational Case Competition occurs annually during winter break, providing students with an excellent opportunity to grow their skills outside of the semester.
This case competition features a social responsibility challenge and is open only to undergraduate student teams. The winning team not only wins a cash prize but also advances to the Milgard Case Competition on Social Responsibility, given the opportunity to win further money and represent Smith on the national stage. Last year, the Maryland team took home the first-place trophy and won global recognition for the Smith School at the 14th annual Milgard Invitational Case Competition.

CSVC hosts a case competition for Master’s students at Smith to provide business feedback to a data-driven organization. Previous client partnerships have allowed students to learn about their businesses’ social and environmental impact while providing the organization with valuable feedback.
The Case Competition is open to all master’s and MBA students at Smith. We have an average of 50 applicants across the Smith master’s and greater UMD master’s programs per semester.

CSVC, in partnership with Deloitte, hosts a case competition for Smith undergraduate students to gain experience delivering strategic business recommendations. Through this collaboration, students gain hands-on consulting experience while analyzing real-world business challenges tied to social and environmental impact.
The case competition is open to all Smith undergraduate students and attracts an average of 50 applicants each semester, reflecting strong interest in experiential learning and purpose-driven business strategy.

CSVC, in partnership with KPMG and Smith’s National Business Fraternities, jointly hosts a case competition for newly initiated members (pledges). This experience introduces new fraternity members to the intersection of business strategy and social impact, allowing them to engage with real-world challenges faced by purpose-driven organizations. Through hands-on analysis and collaborative problem-solving, participants gain early exposure to how businesses integrate social and environmental responsibility into their operations at the very start of their Greek involvement at Smith.
Required for all Smith Business Fraternity pledges. We have an average of 80 participants and over 150 students in attendance.

Expert Guidance: Students will receive an optional Case Training Workshop held by the Director of the Center for Social Value Creation at Smith, Nima Farshchi.
Networking Opportunities: Access to industry professionals for valuable networking experiences, creating connections that extend beyond the program.
Real-world Impact: Engage in meaningful consulting work that contributes to the success of B-Corporations, non-profits, and for-profit organizations.
Time Commitment: Teams will have 2-3 weeks to research the case before presenting their findings to the judges.
