People can adapt to a ‘new normal’ quickly, it turns out

SMITH BRAIN TRUST  Even amid a deadly pandemic, billions of people all over the world have continued to uphold their obligations and responsibilities, the Ladders writes in a recent article highlighting research from Maryland Smith.

It hasn’t always been easy to do. It’s rough focusing on our careers, schoolwork or household chores when risks are all around us. Somehow, however, people have largely found resilience and a way to keep calm and carry on.

Trevor Foulk, assistant professor of management and organization at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, and his co-authors explored how they coped. They found that humans are capable of re-establishing a sense of normalcy much faster than one would assume.
