Alumni Chapter Board

About the Alumni Chapter Board

The Robert H. Smith School of Business alumni chapter board (ACB) is an advisory board to the Office of Alumni Relations which advocates on behalf of Smith School alumni. ACB members are ambassadors who promote the school to the greater alumni community and carry out the board's mission and strategic plan.

The mission of the Alumni Chapter Board is to support the vision of the Smith School of Business by creating a vibrant alumni experience and fostering lifelong relationships between the school and the alumni community.

The Alumni Chapter Board will support the Smith School in achieving the following objectives:

  • Strengthen the Smith community through alumni events that are well attended, executed and provide alumni with lifelong learning opportunities.
  • Build a strong alumni bench to tap into for networking, speaking and volunteering experiences.
  • Leverage alumni relationships to help current students identify career paths and secure jobs.

Board Nominations and Requirements

Applications for the Alumni Chapter Board are now open through March 10, 2023. To nominate yourself or someone else please complete one of the following forms.

Summary of board expectations:

  • Complete a two-year term commitment beginning in June.
  • Attend the onboarding meeting to take place in the summer.
  • Actively participate in three, half-day board meetings per year. Note: local board members are expected to attend two meetings in-person (Fall and Spring). Out-of-town board members will participate remotely but will be asked to be on camera for better participation and community building.
  • Actively participate in one task force (on average, task forces meet monthly).
  • Attend or volunteer for at least one Smith Signature event per year (Signature events are Homecoming Tailgate, Smith Day, Women Inspire, and Smith Reunions). Remote board members can substitute this requirement with the leadership of a virtual event or by hosting a regional event in their respective locations.
  • Participate in at least two other Smith school activities throughout the year.
  • Stay current with board materials, minutes, surveys, etc.
  • Maintain an active, financial membership in the UMD Alumni Association.
  • Participate in Giving Day.
  • Champion and promote the Smith School.
  • Be a donor to the Smith School’s Annual Fund.

The Alumni Chapter Board strives to include Smith alumni representing different degrees, graduate years, business sectors, and geographic locations. The ideal nominee is actively engaged with the Smith School. The time requirements vary but include attending an onboarding meeting, three board meetings, additional Smith school events, and participating in at least one task force or committee. The term length is two years with the option to renew for another 1-2 year term based on standing and previous participation. To be considered for the board, nominees must be graduates of the Robert H. Smith School of Business and have a current membership with the University of Maryland Alumni Association.

The Alumni Chapter Board seeks nominees within and outside of the DMV area, but expects all board members to actively work together to build an engaged and collaborative community.

If you are a Smith undergraduate alumnus/a from the last ten years, please consider the Young Alumni Council. Nominations are open through January each year.

If you have questions about the Alumni Chapter Board, please contact us at smithalumni@umd.edu.
