Centers for International Business Education (CIBE)

The Smith School’s Center for Global Business (CGB) was home to one of the nation’s 16 Centers for International Business Education (CIBE), a Title VI grant program administered by the U.S. Department of Education. The program supported international business education, research, and outreach, serving as a regional and national resource for students, educators, and business professionals.

In 2022, the Center received its sixth CIBE grant, totaling $1.34 million over four years, with 100% matching funds from the Smith School and the University of Maryland. During this final grant period, CGB focused its research and programmatic activities on strengthening U.S. global competitiveness, building resilience, and responding to global shocks. The grant concluded in 2026, marking the end of two decades of CIBE support for the Center’s work in international business education and outreach.

Established by Congress under the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988, the Centers for International Business Education (CIBE) program was created to strengthen the nation’s capacity for international understanding and competitiveness. Administered by the U.S. Department of Education under Title VI, Part B of the Higher Education Act of 1965, the program connected the international education, language training, and research capabilities of universities with the workforce and technological needs of the U.S. business community.

Throughout its history, the CIBE network served as a regional and national resource for business professionals, students, and educators, supporting the development of international expertise and strengthening the connection between higher education and the global business community.
