Smith Analytics Consortium Second Annual Datathon

On April 19, 2021, the Smith Analytics Consortium (SAC) is hosting the 2nd annual Datathon, a 2-week long data-focused competition. Students will have an opportunity to use their problem solving, analytics, and data visualization skills to build a market entry business case for a renewable energy (photovoltaic (PV) solar array) company in Maryland.
Sample variables within the data include: power generation (MW), solar radiation, PV efficiency, average electricity cost ($).
The winning team will receive a $500 cash prize!
- Core Consulting Series [3/29, 3/31, 4/1]: Three 1.5 hour targeted workshops to hone skills needed to succeed in the Datathon and an opportunity to meet team members.
- Datathon Competition [4/19 - 4/30]: Case competition where teams of 3-5 students analyze and visualize data, culminating in recommendations for a market entry of a solar (PV) company in MD.
- March 22 – Registration opens (registration fee: $10)

- April 19, 6:15-7:15 p.m. – Datathon Kick-Off

MBA Orientation Case Competition
Intended Participants: first-year MBA students at Smith School

Smith School collaborates with partner companies to organize a case competition for first-year MBA students every year during orientation week.

Data Challenge is an annual week-long data exploration event at the University of Maryland hosted by The College of Information Studies, The School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, and The Philip Merrill College of Journalism. During the week, UMD students will gain analytical experience by solving challenging problems exploring novel datasets, build technical aptitude integrating datasets to create multidisciplinary knowledge, and obtain real-world team-building experience. This week-long distributed format allows for sufficient time to evaluate, formulate a question about the dataset, and conduct dataset integration, analysis, and results preparation.
Smith School of Business MS Case Competition 2020
Intended Participants: Students in specialty master’s programs at Smith.

The MS Case Competition is a signature offering of the Office of Career Services to support students in developing their presentation skills, teamwork, and analytical abilities. Students will work in teams to critically evaluate a case and to present their findings to alumni and faculty judges.
PwC’s Case Competition
All freshmen and sophomores (and juniors in a 5-year program), all colleges and majors

The Challenge case competition models real-world business scenarios focusing on the strategic issues currently being faced by companies all over the world.

Case Competition Topic:
The role of home testing in remote patient monitoring: leveraging learnings from the COVID-19 pandemic to explore opportunities around critical capabilities and gaps, diagnostic pathways and business models
- Students will form teams of 4-5 with at least one MBA student
- First place: $7,500, Second Place: $5,000 and Third Place: $2,500

Intended Participants: students enrolled in the MBA program at Smith School
Date: September 1, 2020
Students were organized into teams of roughly five members each and given 48 hours to prepare presentations for judging panels composed of KPMG professionals, as well as Maryland Smith faculty and alumni. The top three presentations selected by judges then advanced to a final round.
Intended Participants: Students enrolled part- or full-time in an accredited Master of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Information Systems, Master of Public Health, Master of Business Administration program, or other similar master’s programs that educate students in business, health care, or analytics at an educational institution based in the United States are eligible to enter. Students must be currently enrolled and must not have graduated from the qualifying program at the time of the final case competition presentations. Employees of Humana Inc. are not eligible to participate

The Humana-Mays Healthcare Analytics Competition is adapting to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the pandemic, the case competition will be held virtually.

The Adobe Analytics Challenge is a unique analytics-focused business case competition where university students are given the opportunity to use Adobe’s industry-leading analytics products and access to real-world data from leading organizations such as Major League Baseball, T‑Mobile, Starwood, Lenovo, Condé Nast, Comcast, Overstock.com, Backcountry.com, Sony PlayStation, and MGM Resort International.
