U.S. News Ranks Smith School’s Undergraduate Program Among Nation’s Best
College Park, Md. – August 17, 2010 — The undergraduate program at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is ranked No. 19 in the nation, according to the latest U.S.News & World Report college ranking report, “America’s Best Colleges 2011,” released today. The Smith School placed 10th among public universities and also ranked highly in a number of business specialty categories.
Smith School Student Takes Advantage of Close Proximity to Washington, D.C. As White House Intern
Senior supply chain management major Ryan Brown took the Robert H. Smith School of Business’ mission of “connecting in the Nation’s Capital” very seriously. He took the spring 2010 semester off to take advantage of the University of Maryland, College Park’s, close proximity to Washington, D.C., by working as an intern in the White House Travel Office.

When senior accounting major Greg Waldstreicher enteredEntrepreneur Magazine’s College Entrepreneur of 2010 contest at the suggestion of a University of Maryland alum, he didn’t tell his family or friends. Other than his business partner Gideon Platt, a senior at NYU, he didn’t share his decision to enter with anyone, because the chances of becoming a finalist seemed slim.
2010 Undergraduate Awards Banquet
The Smith community came together on May 6, 2010, to celebrate the achievements of top undergraduate students at the 10th annual Dean’s Undergraduate Awards Banquet. More than 60 students, faculty, staff and alumni enjoyed a banquet at Van Munching Hall. The much-anticipated annual celebration was the cap on the academic year and a final celebration before course finals and commencement.

The Center for Social Value Creation (CSVC) at the Robert H. Smith School of Business organized the final presentations for the spring term of this year’s Social Venture Consulting Program on Thursday, May 6.
2010 Spring Commencement
Comcast Center was full of good cheer as the Smith School celebrated the commencement of 780 undergraduates, 360 MBA/MS students, 51 EMBA students, and 9 doctoral students on May 21. William Gossman, MBA ’91, CEO of hi5 and keynote speaker at commencement, urged students in his commencement address to “practice their leadership skills on themselves.” “Don’t assume legitimacy. Don’t search for legitimacy. Create it for yourself, today,” said Gossman. “Once you have created that vision and that legitimacy, you need the courage to make it so.”
Smith School Hosts 7th Annual Wikler Finance Case Competition
The seventh annual Joseph M. Wikler Finance Case Competition took place on April 16, 2010, at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. The competition, which is open to juniors and seniors from the BMGT 440 Advanced Financial Management class, began with nine teams selected by the instructors of the Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 sections.

Smith Undergrads Help College Park Community
The Smith Undergraduate Student Association (SUSA) at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, is working hard to be involved with their community members. This semester, SUSA, an umbrella organization that has 24 clubs within it, has participated or will be participating in several community-oriented events such as a canned food drive, Relay For Life of University of Maryland and a Dance Marathon.
QUESTpedition: Smith Undergrads Compete as Countries to Grow GDP and Manage Carbon Footprint
t couldn’t have been louder. Green bid sheets flew back and forth across the auditorium and students huddled in intense conversations, sometimes pulling a professor over to consult. The commotion was part of an experiential learning game for the QUEST Honors Fellows program that challenged participants to grow a nation’s economy while simultaneously managing its carbon footprint. The event was organized by Joseph Bailey, research associate professor of decision, operations and information technology and executive director of the QUEST program.
