Smith School Associate Dean Scott Koerwer Honored with 2004 International Leadership Award

The World Trade Center Institute, a non-profit organization connecting Maryland business to the globe, has honored Scott Koerwer, associate dean for executive education, entrepreneurship and marketing communications at the Smith School as a winner of the 2004 International Leadership Award. The award recognizes the Smith School with six other firms that stand out as outstanding examples of international leadership.

The awards were presented at the 9th Annual International Business Leadership Awards March 30 at the American Visionary Arts Museum in Baltimore. Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. and members of the governors staff were on hand for the ceremony. William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland, Susan Carroll Schwab president and CEO of the University of Maryland Foundation, Smith School Dean Howard Frank, and Smith School staff were also among attendees honoring Koerwer and the other award winners.

The annual award goes to business champions who have been selected from more than 150,000 Maryland companies as individuals who have led their firms to new global heights. Recipients are those who exemplify exceptional entrepreneurial spirit, determination, creativity and cultural sensitivity all important attributes for success in the global marketplace.

I am extremely pleased that Scott has been honored as a 2004 International Leadership Award recipient, said Howard Frank, dean of the Smith School. Scotts commitment and hard work in bringing the Smith School to important, emerging markets such as China, have helped place the Smith School in a leading position as a global provider of business education.

Koerwer has been in his current position at the Smith School since 2001 and has led many of the school's international executive education initiatives. These include the 2003 launch of an Executive MBA (EMBA) program in Beijing and an EMBA program in Shanghai, which begins in November. The Smith School has also partnered with ChinaCast Holdings to deliver executive education programs and content to Chinas remote areas. Earlier this month the Smith School announced a partnership with the Graduate School of Business Administration (GSBA) in Zurich, Switzerland to launch the Smith-GSBA Global Executive MBA (Smith-GSBA DDG-EMBA) for international business executives seeking a strong competitive edge in the global marketplace.

Previously senior director of corporate management development at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, Koerwer held a variety of leadership positions in the division of executive education at the Wharton School during his nine years there. Koerwer has a bachelors degree from Muhlenberg College, earned his masters degree in government and political science from Lehigh University, earned a two-year certificate in organizational development from the National Training Labs, and earned an Ed.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
