When an 80-foot tall tsunami hit the coastal area of Sumatra in South East Asia, the impact was felt all the way across the ocean to Maryland, USA. Manjula Dissanayake a senior business major here at the Robert H. Smith School of Business and a native of Sri Lanka lost several relatives.

University of Maryland Business School Gives Recruiters Free Access to International Employment Advice

The Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland today announced a unique collaboration with Reed Smith LLP, one of the largest law firms in the United States and known for a leading immigration practice, that gives employers free access to Reeds immigration lawyers for legal advice and consulting services. Employers will benefit from the innovative new program, which in keeping with the Smith Office of Career Managements dedication to employer-focused customer service, will make it easier to recruit and hire foreign graduates.

Smith MBAs to Manage Free Tax Preparation Service for Low to Moderate Income Individuals; Clinic Held in Van Munching Hall

Do you know someone who is puzzled by tax laws or unsure about which credits and deductions they can take? Free tax help is available to certain individuals through the Campus Tax Clinic 2005 (CTC '05) hosted by the Smith School and a team of MBA students. Trained and certified community volunteer tax assistors will provide help with basic income tax returns to families earning less than $35,000 per year in Van Munching Hall on April 9th and 10th. Smith To Host National Undergraduate Business Symposium NUBS 2005: Technology in Business

The Robert H. Smith School of Business is pleased to welcome thought leaders from top undergraduate business schools from across the United States on Friday, March 18, 2005 and Saturday, March 19, 2005. Some 60 participants, primarily undergraduate program directors and faculty leaders, will attend this years National Undergraduate Business Symposium (NUBS), which aims to continually improve member schools undergraduate business program through discussion of common issues and sharing of ideas in today's rapidly-changing global arena.

Women Leaders Join At Smith For Day of Sharing

On March 4th, 2005, the Smith Association of Women MBAs hosted their marquee event: the Women's Leadership Conference (WLF) at the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Sponsored by Bank of America, the days activities included a keynote speech by Cynthia Flanders 82, MBA 88, Middle Market Banking Executive for the Mid-Atlantic region of Bank of America, and three panels touching on consulting, finance and non-traditional careers. The day concluded with a special topic seminar on "Negotiation for Women," taught by Dr. Joyce Russell, professor of management and organization at Smith.

Undergraduate Awards Banquet Honors Students and Professors

The Smith School community gathered on April 29, 2004, to honor exceptional undergraduate business students and professors at the Fourth Annual Undergraduate Awards Banquet, held at the University of Maryland University College Inn and Conference Center. "Tonight we celebrate the talent and energy of some of the leaders in the Smith School community" said Dean Howard Frank. "Please join me in congratulating them.." Milton T. Matthews '68, vice president and chief customer officer of Hershey Foods Corporation, served as the master of ceremonies for the event.

Over 1,500 Sign Smith's Tag Line Banner

Robert H. Smith '50 signed it in green directly below a logo that bears his name. University of Maryland President C. D. Mote Jr. signed it simply Dan Mote. Dean Howard Frank was the first to sign it; Justin Silbert, senior decision and information sciences major, was the last. Some, like John Hoss Cartwright, made it a work of careful deliberation. Others offered a bold, undecipherable, highly stylized scrawl.

Winter Smith School Commencement Highlights, December 2001

Hundreds of Smith School students joined their families and friends in celebration at the schools winter commencement ceremony, Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001. Approximately 287 students applied for bachelors degrees, 78 for masters degrees, and six for Ph.Ds. A couple dozen August graduates also participated in the Smith School ceremony, held in Cole Student Activities Building.
