Smith School of Business produced research for a new Social Enterprise Ecosystems Report, released Aug. 16 in collaboration with Deloitte, Capital One and Halcyon Incubator in Washington, D.C.

The two startups are so big that their names have become not just noun, but verb. The riding-hailing service and the house-sharing service are two of today's best-known unicorn companies, privately held startups valued at more than $1 billion.  There was a time when the notion of a $1 billion tech startup seemed like a far-fetched, mythical creation. Today, though, there are loads of these companies out there. 

A delegation of female business leaders from Latin America visited the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business on July 13, 2017, as part of the Women’s Entrepreneurship in the Americas (WEAmericas) initiative in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. The visit to the Smith School was organized by the World Trade Center Institute (WTCI) in Baltimore, Md.

Big ideas, the ones capable of fundamentally changing the planet, could come from anywhere, says Crista Gibbons, vice president of client solutions, strategy and operations at National Geographic. Gibbons, who graduated from the part-time MBA program at University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business in 2004, leads a new initiative at National Geographic, called “Chasing Genius.”
