Smith Terps at the Maryland Food Bank

Smith Terps at the Maryland Food Bank

On Friday, Feb. 26, 2016, students and staff from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business participated in a community service activity with the Maryland Food Bank, a hunger-relief organization. Smith Terp volunteers were assigned to the Maryland Food Bank’s main warehouse near Baltimore, Md., and spent the afternoon repacking donated food on a conveyor system, packing assorted food kits, packing health and beauty kits, and checking expiration dates.

“This was my first time to take part in a community service activity,” said Amy (Aoxue) Bai, a current master of finance student. “I had fun there, and the feeling was really good when I knew I was helping people.”

Despite being one of the wealthiest states in the U.S., there is a very strong need for food assistance in Maryland, as one in eight individuals are food-insecure. The Maryland Food Bank’s efforts focus on leading the movement to end hunger throughout the state by distributing food to those in need.
