Smith School Honors Marriott, Nextel and CEO of Capital One With 2005 Leadership & Excellence Awards

On May 5, the Robert H. Smith School of Business recognized the recipients of the 2005 Smith Leadership and Excellence Awards which pay tribute to business leaders and organizations that have made a significant and positive impact in the mid-Atlantic region.

Marriott International, Inc. is recipient of the Business Excellence Award, which recognizes a public or private business that has made a significant and positive impact in the mid-Atlantic Region. Marriott was selected for its impressive history of quality and commitment to its customers, associates and the state of Maryland; and in particular for its local programs assisting economically disadvantaged, people with disabilities, and children and young adults with health and learning needs. Dean Howard Frank presented the the award to Marriott International representatives Jim Poulos 70, executive finance manager, Host Marriott Corp., and Kevin Kimball 72, executive vice president, Marriott Corp.

Nextel Communications, Inc. is recipient of the Leaders for the Digital Economy Award, which recognizes a public or private business that has successfully demonstrated through its mission and practices what it means to be a Leader for the Digital Economy.

Nextel was selected for its role as a leading digital wireless communications innovator and its ability to provide products and services that are first, better and different. Chris Hackett, Nextel's vice president for education accepted the award.

 

Dean Howard Frank presents the Leadership Excellence Award to Richard Fairbank, Chairman & CEO of Capital One Financial Corporation.

Richard Fairbank, Chairman & CEO of Capital One Financial Corporation, is recipient of the Leadership Excellence Award, which recognizes an individual who has made a significant and positive impact on his or her industry, as well as the mid-Atlantic region.

Fairbank was chosen for his strong role in leading Capital One from a start-up as a division of a regional bank to a FORTUNE 200 company, as well as for his entrepreneurial spirit, commitment to employees, customers and the financial services industry.

The 2005 Smith Leadership and Excellence Awards are designed to honor those that are working to advance business practices and improve their communities, said Howard Frank, dean of the Robert H. Smith School of Business. I take great pride in presenting this years winners and in helping to ensure that their efforts are recognized and held as outstanding examples for future generations of business leaders.

The annual Smith Leadership and Excellence Awards recognize individuals and organizations that make a significant and positive impact in the mid-Atlantic region. Nominees for the 2005 Smith Leadership and Excellence Awards were selected by a group of peers and academics, and final nominees were judged by a distinguished panel of business and academic leaders that included members of the Smith School Board of Visitors and Deans Advisory Council.
