In 2023, Smith introduced a new advanced degree program for working professionals, the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA).
The three-year program is for people with a passion for research who want to become leaders. They learn business strategies and research methodologies, working closely with top faculty to publish research, consult with organizations and teach. Students also complete two summer research projects and a capstone project. Classes take place on Fridays and Saturdays, with three in-person meeting days each month.
Meet three Smith DBA students:
Brian Manning ’98, MS ’17, DBA ’26: Forging a New Future for Trinidad and Tobago
As Trinidad and Tobago’s finance minister, Brian Manning ’98, MS ’17, DBA ’26, is investing in the future of his country and leveraging his Smith experiences to do so. Appointed in 2020, he’s helping to diversify the Caribbean nation’s economy from energy-intensive industries to others, including the tech sector.
Manning first earned his bachelor’s degree at Smith, then came back after working in investment banking and finance to get his master’s degree in finance. Now he’s back again.
He wants to bring new approaches to industry challenges in his country — and says Smith’s DBA program is the best place to learn how to do that. “People like me can learn the skills of the future and gain confidence in our ability to lead in this bold new world.”
Brendan Dunne, DBA ’26: Building a Legacy of Service
After over 20 years of U.S. Army service, Brendan Dunne, DBA ’26, looked to his passion and purpose to figure out his next move.
He is co-founder and head of public sector for software company Lovelace AI. Dunne, who was recognized as a 2024 Tillman Scholar, aspires to teach and mentor others. He wants to develop his research and teaching skills.
“I think that we have an obligation to help others, share lessons learned and be a resource to others,” he says. “Teaching is the ability to impart your experiences and knowledge to others. It’s just something I’m drawn to because I want to keep giving back however I can.”
Takesha Brown, DBA ’26: Charting New Waters
At 18, Takesha Brown, DBA ’26, enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve her country and travel the world. She was stationed in Guam, Georgia, Japan and Virginia and traveled to several countries, including Hong Kong, South Korea and Australia — earning her undergraduate and master’s degrees along the way.
In 2013 she left the Navy, ultimately ending up in her current role as director of Branding and Digital Strategy at defense contractor ITC. She’s hoping to leverage AI, machine learning and predictive analytics for innovative business solutions.
“I’d love to one day create a partnership between the Smith School and my employer to collaborate on AI initiatives,” says Brown, who is excited to work on an AI-related dissertation.
“This research will always be a part of the University of Maryland system,” says Brown. “I know I’m leaving something behind that will be my legacy, quite possibly my magnum opus. It’s something that could benefit future generations.”
