Dear Smith Community,

Since July 1, 2021, all new students, faculty and staff have participated in the TerrapinSTRONG onboarding program. Our current faculty and staff members are integral to the TerrapinSTRONG vision of an inclusive environment, where every member of our community feels that they belong and are empowered to reach their full potential. That means all of us must be both aware of the message and actively involved in enacting it.

We hope the shared values of TerrapinSTRONG will guide our actions as we strive to be a more inclusive campus community, to which we each feel connected. TerrapinSTRONG ensures new members of our community start with a shared understanding of what it means to belong to this community. It serves as a jumping-off point for the work we are all doing to better embody our shared values.

The program was developed with input from students, faculty and staff from all areas of our campus, and everyone who participates will have the opportunity to provide feedback. The program takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and is organized into modules with videos, resources and reflection activities. The program welcomes members into our community, discusses some of our history, explains our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and introduces some of our traditions. You will be treated to a free scoop of ice cream at the Maryland Dairy following completion of the program.

We all must be involved in striving toward TerrapinSTRONG’s vision of an inclusive environment where every member of our community feels that they belong and are empowered to reach their full potential.
