In New Role, MBA Student Keeps a Focus on Diversity, Inclusion
Jasmine Snead understands that prioritizing diversity and inclusion can help people “feel more heard,” especially in times of anguish. As vice president of Inclusion and Professional Development of the MBA Association (MBAA), Snead, an FTMBA/MPP student, is currently leading efforts within Maryland Smith’s MBA programs to promote diversity and inclusion in all aspects of business school life. “We are all going to encounter someone from a different background than us, and we want to facilitate healthy communication and discourse for when that happens,” Snead said.

Orientation looked a bit different for the current first-year MBA students at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. But much like in previous years, the Smith Orientation Case Competition was a highlight, kicking off the new semester. This year’s competition, hosted virtually in partnership with KPMG, challenged students to create innovative solutions for COVID-19-related problems in the airline, public transit and theater industries.

Maryland Smith welcomed new students to school for the fall 2020 semester with a full lineup of orientation activities, held virtually via Zoom this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. All orientation programs offered an introduction to Smith School leaders and the Smith community. They also highlighted Smith’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Promise, the school’s pledge to engage in critical conversations to make everyone feel represented, heard and included at Maryland Smith.

Maryland Smith Welcomes UMD President Pines
Darryll J. Pines officially takes the helm of the state of Maryland’s flagship university on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, becoming the 34th president of the University of Maryland, College Park, and continuing a career of leadership and excellence. At the Robert H. Smith School of Business, his appointment to the university’s top job, back in February 2020, was met with cheers. Understandably – Pines previously served as dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering, and the Smith School and the Clark School have a long, strong history of partnership.

When appointed as the University of Maryland president in 2010, Wallace Loh inspired the greater Maryland community with his challenge to “Lead Fearlessly.” Now, 10 years later, Loh is stepping down as president and entrusting future generations of Terps to continue the work he began.
