We are often told that networking can make the difference in our careers. And many of us have thought, at one time or another, that we should be doing more of it. However, while networking is indeed a powerful tool, when it comes to networking, more is not always better.

Internship recruitment – those two words take the utmost priority for MBA students in the fall and spring semester of their first year. From rehearsing the Tell Me About Yourself (TMAY), to fine-tuning résumés and practicing behavioral interview questions, most students find it demanding to balance the internship recruitment process and the program’s rigorous course load. For international students, there’s an added wrinkle, with the list of U.S. companies willing to offer sponsorships for specific roles being slightly more narrow and, therefore, a bit more competitive.

How coming together virtually makes pursuing an MBA a little less lonely.

It is almost the end of 2020 and we all know what that means; it’s time to start thinking about your New Year’s resolutions. We’re all familiar with the typical resolutions that get thrown about, exercise more, lose weight, save money, et cetera. And while those are all fine and good goals, I wanted to throw out a few different ideas this year that could be helpful for business students who are on the job search. New Year’s Resolution idea:

Even to the naturally introverted like me, being in a purely virtual world for a full-time MBA program is not ideal.

In a world where “Star Wars,” “The Office” and ugly sweaters can all be part of the holiday gathering, I am here to say, affirmatively, that virtual holiday spirit is real and alive. On Friday, I attended the very first signature event of the academic year, MBA Community Happy Hour, planned by our fearless MBAA vice president of signature events, Niharika Gupta. She collaborated with the PTMBA Association to provide the full-time and part-time MBA students an opportunity to network and get to know each other through a fun gingerbread decorating competition.

Challenges excite me. They push me beyond my comfort zone so that I’m able to realize what I’m truly capable of. They allow me to grow and stretch with lessons learned along the way. Making way for growth means saying yes to opportunities, including the ones that seem daunting at first. My latest challenge was completing a case competition in 24 hours. With a big yes, I registered and never looked back.

This past summer, I was a remote MBA intern. It was an interesting experience, doing a virtual MBA internship during a pandemic. As expected, I learned a lot – about the field, about the company I worked for, about remote work, and, more generally about being a successful intern. Some background info: my internship was Navy Federal Credit Union and lasted for three months during the summer of 2020. I was assigned to work out of the Florida office, but because of the pandemic, I never left home in Baltimore.

In 2020, virtual is the new black. Classes, happy hours and even conferences have shifted to the new norm. Those of us starting business school in this new norm don’t have another norm to compare it to. So, from what I can tell from this side of the screen, we’ve been making it our own. Since we can only do so much to control the tide of the pandemic and return to a new state of normal, I wanted to reflect on some of the upsides to virtual business school that I’ve experienced during term A. 1. More hours in the day.

50:50, 70:30, 90:10. No matter how you slice and dice it, a major component to MBA programs is balancing classwork and career search. The optimal split time between the two? That’s a matter of opinion. However, as I’ve learned, part of the first month of your MBA experience is evaluating how you will handle this great balancing act.
