Lemma Senbet Honored for Contributions to Smith School

Lemma Senbet, William E. Mayer Professor of Finance, was honored for his many years of service to the finance department, and the Smith School of Business, at a lavish dinner party at the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C., on October 5, 2006. The gala event was attended by about 90 people, including all the former chairs of the department, and a past dean of the University of Washington, who flew in specially for the event. Former Smith School Deans Rudy Lamone and Bill Mayer were also present to express their appreciation for Lemmas many contributions to the Smith School community.

Smith Faculty Headline Management Conference in Zrich

Smith faculty members brought the Smith Schools thought leadership to Europe in a series of workshops Tuesday, October 3 at the 16th Zrich MBA Congress. Rhonda Reger, professor of management and organization, Gurdip Bakshi, professor of finance, Judy Frels, senior director of custom programs, and Rob Sheehan, academic director for executive MBA and executive degree programs, were among thought leaders presenting at the conference, which focused on leading management issues.

Erich Studer-Ellis, Tyser Teaching Fellow of management science and statistics at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, has been named byBusinessWeek as one of the nation's favorite undergraduate business school professors. Studer-Ellis is one of 22 U.S. faculty members undergraduate students mentioned most frequently when surveyed by BusinessWeek in 2006. "I was unbelievably impressed," says recent grad and teaching assistant Erin Olshever of Studer-Ellis in the BusinessWeek story. "In a class of 250 students, he could call on anyone by name."

Shane, under secretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation, and Ron Widdows, chief executive of global transportation company APL Ltd., received the joint 2006 Person of the Year Award from the Smith Schools Logistics, Transportation and Supply Chain Management (LTSCM) Society and the Supply Chain Club (SCC) on Oct. 27 in a ceremony at the university's Stamp Student Union Grand Ballroom.

University of Maryland Management and Organization Faculty Honored by Academy of Management

College Park, MD August 2, 2006 The University of Marylands Robert H. Smith School of Business today announced professor Kathryn M. Kay Bartol and professor emeritus Edwin A. Locke, both management and organization department faculty members, have been honored by the Academy of Management for their scholarly and professional contributions to the field. Bartol and Locke will accept their awards at the academys Presidential Luncheon on August 15, in Atlanta.
