First-ever region-specific Smith alumni club launches in New York City

Times Square is famous for many things: It’s the location of one of the most recognized New Year’s Eve celebrations in the world; it’s the site of the historic Times Square kiss in 1945; and it’s home to Times Square Studios, from which ABC’s Good Morning America airs each day. Times Square will also be remembered by many alumni from the Robert H. Smith School of Business as the spot of the Smith Alumni Club of New York launch event that was two years in the making.

GE Women Leaders Share Leadership Advice with Smith Women

On Tuesday, October 5, 2010, the Smith Association of Women MBAs (SAWMBA) held its annual GE Women’s Panel event at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. Over the years, SAWMBA has established a valuable relationship with General Electric (GE), specifically its Women’s Network. Every year, the association hosts a panel that gives Smith women and SAWMBA supporters the opportunity to hear practical and sincere advice from successful women employed by GE. This year’s panel topic was “A Profile of Leadership and Building Career Capital.”

Smith School Holds Annual Undergraduate Career Fair

This September, more than 600 undergraduate students and 61 firms packed the Riggs Alumni Center for the 2010 Robert H. Smith School of Business Undergraduate Career Fair. Saad Yaldram ’12 has been preparing for this day for weeks. When he’s not researching firms, he is role playing behavioral and case interviews with classmates. “I want to tone my skills so that I am ready to present myself properly to recruiters,” said Yaldram, who wants to pursue a career in government and intelligence services.

STARS Transfer Night Welcomes Incoming Transfer Students to the Smith School

On Tuesday, Sept. 7, the Smith School STARS program —Smith Talent Acquisition & Referral System— welcomed newly admitted transfer students to a networking reception designed to introduce them to each other and to corporate partners and alumni who recruit Smith school students, giving students a head start on the process of exploring careers and opportunities in business.

2010 Freshman Fellows Orientation

College Park, Md. – Aug. 28, 2010 – The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business hosted its annual Freshman Fellows Orientation Program, sponsored by Ernst & Young. Staffed by representatives from both the Smith School and Ernst & Young, the day kicked off with group icebreakers. After an introduction and welcome from Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Pat Cleveland, keynote speaker Dan Black, director of Americas campus recruiting for Ernst & Young, took the stage.

The Robert H. Smith School of Business, Office of Career Services hosted an Employer Appreciation Dinner on Thursday, July 22 in the nation’s capital to recognize the importance of the employer relationships that are created at the Smith School.

The University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business is excited to announce some favorite books in the "Seventh Annual Top 10 Summer Reading List for Business Leaders" for 2010, as recommended by faculty members and administrators.

2010 Undergraduate Awards Banquet

The Smith community came together on May 6, 2010, to celebrate the achievements of top undergraduate students at the 10th annual Dean’s Undergraduate Awards Banquet. More than 60 students, faculty, staff and alumni enjoyed a banquet at Van Munching Hall. The much-anticipated annual celebration was the cap on the academic year and a final celebration before course finals and commencement.

2010 Spring Commencement

Comcast Center was full of good cheer as the Smith School celebrated the commencement of 780 undergraduates, 360 MBA/MS students, 51 EMBA students, and 9 doctoral students on May 21. William Gossman, MBA ’91, CEO of hi5 and keynote speaker at commencement, urged students in his commencement address to “practice their leadership skills on themselves.” “Don’t assume legitimacy. Don’t search for legitimacy. Create it for yourself, today,” said Gossman. “Once you have created that vision and that legitimacy, you need the courage to make it so.”

U-Md. Robert H. Smith School of Business Receives $1M from Henry & Elaine Kaufman Foundation to Support Fellowship in Business History

College Park, Md. – May 4, 2010 – The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business today announced it will receive a $1 million endowment from the Henry & Elaine Kaufman Foundation to support a fellowship in business history, in affiliation with the school’s Center for Financial Policy. University of Maryland history professor David Sicilia was appointed the first Henry Kaufman Fellow in Business History, effective July 1.
