Smith Students Create Health Apps; Google Glass Stands Out

During the second half of the spring 2014 semester, graduate students in the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business developed mobile health applications. Their mission targeted challenges to patient-consumers posed by diabetes, elder care, urgent-care logistics, obesity and treatment selection.

Smith Students Join Buffett, Gates on Fox Business

Finance students at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business shared a virtual platform on May 5, 2014, with two of the most successful individuals in business. The setting was Omaha, Neb., where Fox Business Network conducted an hourlong Warren Buffett interview to culminate its coverage of the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders meeting. Microsoft cofounder and Berkshire shareholder Bill Gates joined the conversation in the studio, while about 35 Smith undergraduates participated remotely from a University of Maryland classroom.

Smith Hosts 3rd Women Leading Women Event

Two-time Terp Brenda Freeman ’87, MBA ’91, isn’t shy about offering advice to women, no matter what stage they are in their careers.  She headlined the Robert H. Smith School of Business’s third annual Women Leading Women event on April 24, 2014, during which she talked to the crowd about fitting into different corporate cultures, finding a good mentor and having a good work-life balance, among other things. 

Student teams Show UMD How They ‘Do Good’ at Do Good Challenge Finals

Riggs Alumni Center was full of passion and energy at the third annual Do Good Challenge. Students Helping Honduras and justlikeyou.org were the two winners of the night, each winning $6,000. Students Helping Honduras also won the Audience Choice Award, a $2,500 text-to-vote prize sponsored by the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. Both Students Helping Honduras and justlikeyou.org are led by undergraduates at the Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Smith Students to Join Buffett-Gates Interview

Watch the Fox Business Network from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, May 5, as students representing the Robert H. Smith School of Business participate in a live interview with Warren Buffett and Bill Gates.  More than 40 Smith finance majors will appear, remotely, from a Van Munching classroom. One of the students will pose a question to Buffett during an interview that wraps up the network’s coverage of the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholder meeting in Omaha.

Finance Students Travel to Bangladesh with World Bank

5 Master of Finance students and 3 MBA students from the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business are in Bangladesh April 16-26, 2014 on a one-week mission with the World Bank to explore the possibility of expanding rural electrification through solar energy micro-grids. 

Smith MBAs Excel in OSU-Fisher Invitational

A team of full-time, first-year MBA students from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business captured second place in the 22nd edition of the Fisher Invitational Case Competition at Ohio State University. Brendan Collins, Bini Dawit, Nadine Payne and Katie Tedrow represented Smith among 11 MBA programs. Competitors represented Big Ten Conference schools, plus programs from the University of Rochester and Washington University in St. Louis.

100+ Smith Students Study Abroad During Spring Break

For spring break (March 2014), 156 MBA and undergraduate students traveled to Brazil, England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Nicaragua, and the United Arab Emirates for a variety of study abroad experiences offered by the Office of Global Initiatives at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business. Nearly 70 MBA students studied abroad in Europe and Latin America while nearly 90 undergraduates participated in courses in Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.
