Business Summit Speaker Shares Three Keys for Workplace 2025

Meeting current customer demands won’t be enough in 2025, keynote speaker Calvin G. Butler Jr. said on Nov. 13, 2015, at the fourth annual Smith School Business Summit in Baltimore. “Meeting the current demands of customers is only part of it,” said Butler, CEO of Baltimore Gas and Electric Company. “You need to think about where your customers are going, and you need to meet them there.”

Smith School Receives $10M Gift from Smith Family

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland announced today a gift of $10 million from the Robert H. Smith Family Foundation to support MBA scholarships, undergraduate leadership programs and facility enhancements for the Robert H. Smith School of Business. The gift will also continue to fund the school's Center for Social Value Creation.

Smith Freshmen Attend Day of Service

More than 70 freshmen in the College Park Scholars’ Business, Society & the Economy program (BSE) began their college life by completing a day of community service. On Friday, August 28, one day after having moved onto campus, the BSE students fanned out to several sites across Montgomery County dedicated to helping the homeless.

West Baltimore has been at the epicenter of upheaval in a city rocked by recent protests and riots following the death of Freddie Gray in police custody. In the aftermath, lawmakers and local officials are calling for ways to effect change in the low-income, marginalized community. An innovative experiential learning practicum piloted by the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, School of Social Work, and Carey School of Law offers some potential solutions.

Children Explore Careers at Smith Event

Elementary schoolchildren grimaced and peered through their fingers when a biomedical engineer showed them excerpts from a laser surgery video. Then they sat up and oohed when the same speaker introduced them to a robot that allows doctors to treat patients remotely. Similar scenes played out in multiple classrooms May 1, 2015, during Career Day at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.

UMD’s Best Student Changemakers Compete at Do Good Finals

During February and March, hundreds of students across University of Maryland worked to "do good" for their favorite cause in the 4th annual Do Good Challenge. The six most impactful and innovative ventures and projects from a field of 60 teams have advanced to the Do Good Challenge finals where they will compete for more than $20,000 in prizes. Each team will pitch their venture or project in front of a live audience and panel of judges at the Riggs Alumni Center on April 28 from 7-9 p.m.
