Online Master of Science Admissions

Applying to an online Master of Science program at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is an important step toward developing specialized expertise while balancing your professional and personal commitments. Applications are reviewed holistically, with consideration given to each applicant’s academic background, professional experience and potential for success in their chosen program.

Admissions Requirements

All applications must include:

  • A $90 application fee
  • An essay explaining your qualifications and interest in the program
  • A current professional résumé
  • One letter of recommendation
  • Transcripts from each college or university attended
  • TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic or PTE Academic scores, if required
  • Evidence of relevant, program-specific coursework

Application Deadlines

Applicants can expect an admission decision within four weeks after submitting a complete application. This timeline assumes that applicants respond promptly to any requests for additional information.

Enrollment Deposit

Admitted students must submit a $500 deposit within four weeks of receiving their admission decision to confirm their place in the program.

Students admitted within three months of the program’s start date may have an earlier deposit deadline. Log in to the application portal to review the deadline listed in your admission letter, accept your offer and submit your deposit.

Academic History

Upload a transcript from each college or university you attended. If the transcript from the institution that awarded your degree does not show that the degree was conferred, also upload a copy of your diploma or degree certificate.

If any academic document is not in English, upload the original-language document and a literal English translation.

If you are admitted, you must submit official academic records to the University of Maryland Graduate School in accordance with its requirements.

The Graduate School requires a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants with a GPA below 3.0 are encouraged to use the optional essay to provide relevant context.

U.S. Military Members and Veterans

UMD Smith values the experience that U.S. service members, veterans and their families bring to our community. Application fee waivers are available to active-duty service members, veterans and eligible family members.

Application Fee Waiver

The waiver is available to active-duty service members, veterans and family members using transferred GI Bill benefits.

Contact the MS Admissions Office at least 48 hours before submitting your application so the waiver can be processed. To request a waiver, email a copy of your transcript, DD Form 214 or proof of active-duty status to smithmasters@umd.edu.

Your waiver must be approved and activated before you submit your application.

English Proficiency (International Students)

Applicants must submit official TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic or PTE Academic scores unless they qualify for an exemption. Applicants to online programs must meet the University of Maryland Graduate School’s minimum scores for full enrollment.

Submit Your Scores

  • TOEFL iBT: Request that ETS send your official scores to the University of Maryland using institutional code 5814. The Graduate School accepts valid TOEFL iBT MyBest scores.
  • IELTS Academic: Ask your test center to send your electronic scores to the University of Maryland Graduate School’s e-download account. Paper IELTS score reports are not accepted.
  • PTE Academic: Send your official score report to the University of Maryland through your Pearson account.
