Snider Center Students Achieve Excellence Over Summer Break

“How was your summer?”

Everyone asks this pinnacle question on the first day of fall semester classes. Maybe you’ve been crafting the perfect response, perhaps you haven’t given much thought to it, or most likely, you still wish it was summer. Either way, hopefully, you had a rewarding break. For many students in the Ed Snider Center for Enterprise and Markets at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, summer was jam-packed with adventure and opportunity.

Kavon Badie, a SELF 2015 alumnus and current sophomore at the Smith School, traveled to Kampala, Uganda, as an operations analyst intern for Johns Hopkins Hospitals. He conducted work with data and health care providers to increase efficiency in their HIV/AID research center. While in Uganda, he also reached out to local entrepreneurs and collaborated with educational programs to help them start their businesses. His experience inspired him to launch Project MZZ, a student organization devoted to providing consultations to businesses in developing nations.

Perveen Gulati, a former Snider Center intern, participated in the Girls Who Invest intensive summer internship program. The program, designed to increase the number of women in the financial realm, starts off with a four-week program at the University of Pennsylvania. She was then matched to a six-week internship with the Alternative Investment Group in Fairfield, Conn. While at her internship, she worked on several projects including evaluating potential hedge fund managers for their flagship funds.

Many students pursued internships and explored career options this summer. Iva Boishin, the Enterprise through Literature coordinator at the Snider Center, spent part of her summer in Washington, D.C., as a marketing analytics intern at Wunderman, an international marketing agency. Sheida Gholamimehrabadi, who graduated last May, joined KPMG in their commercial auditing practice.

Other Snider Center students stayed at the University of Maryland, giving service to residential summer programs. Lakshmi Shyamakrishnan trained to become an orientation advisor for the incoming class this summer. Jake Fechter was a resident director for the Snider Enterprise and Leadership Fellows (SELF) program – a two-week high school program for rising juniors and seniors.

The staff at the Ed Snider Center are thrilled to recognize our students for their amazing accomplishments and can’t wait to see what this semester holds for their talents and abilities!
