Global Teams Compete in the FinTech in Singapore IB Agility Lab

The Center for Global Business held the International Business (IB) Agility Lab: FinTech in Singapore from October 14 - 29, 2021. The IB Agility Labs are short-term virtual case challenges that allow undergraduate students to learn from global business leaders, collaborate with international peers, and focus on business resilience.

Maryland Smith partnered with EY, Universidad de la Sabana in Colombia, Indian Institute of Management Indore, and Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management in Belgium to host the FinTech lab. The case was delivered by Volopay, a Singapore-based FinTech startup  exploring AI solutions for expense management software.

This Agility Lab proved how the global business world is becoming more interconnected. Not only did 51 students from four universities compete in mixed multinational teams, but they also discovered how Volopay aims to explore Australian business models, learning how to synergize multiple business markets and cultures from around the world.

Four final teams presented their solution for Volopay’s expansion from Singapore to Australia live to the Smith community, including a judging panel comprised of Tejwansh (Tej) Singh Anand, Academic Professor, MS in Information Systems; Kislaya Prasad, Academic Director for the Center for Global Business; Mark Rabinowitz, ‘05, CPA, Assurance Partner at EY; and Ellen Polasnky, ‘87, Financial Services Senior Executive and Coordinating Partner at EY. Students were scored on analysis of case evidence, the critical issues they identified, the creativity and feasibility of their solutions, passionate and professional presentation, and their quick-thinking and thoughtful answers to questions.

This Lab crossed five international borders, three time zones, and three continents - and it took great skill and dedication to effectively manage across difference and distance to compete. Congratulations to Ruoxuan Dani He (UMD), Salma Rachid (USabana), Samriddhi Choudhury (IIM Indore) for winning the competition. Winners will receive a certificate of achievement.

Applications for the fall 2021 IB Agility Labs are closed, but students are encouraged to RSVP to view the final presentations for the upcoming IB Agility Lab “Sustainability in Iceland” Friday, November 19 at 8 p.m.

This event was supported in part by a Title VI grant program known as CIBE (Centers for International Business Education) administered by the U.S. Department of Education.
