“Dream, Girl” Film Screening

The Office of Diversity Initiatives at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is excited to kick off the 2016-17 school year with a screening of the film Dream, Girl, a documentary that showcases inspiring success stories of female entrepreneurs. Join the women of Smith for the screening and post-screening discussion reception. Dream big with us on Sept. 13 at 6 p.m.

We know the names of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg. But what about the female entrepreneurs? What’s their story?

Dream, Girl is a documentary that provides a response to that question. The film tells the stories of inspiring and ambitious female entrepreneurs as part of a movement to spark the next generation of leaders. The filmmakers, Erin Bagwell and Komal Minhas, talk to enterprising women leaders, from brand new startups to million dollar industries.

The Dream, Girl movement began when Bagwell, then working as an interactive designer, was becoming increasingly frustrated with the doldrums of corporate culture while discovering a growing passion for telling the stories of inspiring women on her blog, Feminist Wednesday. Fueled by coffee and her lifelong dream to make a feature length film, Bagwell made a bold move – she quit her day job and launched a Kickstarter campaign that raised $100K in 30 days. With that, Dream, Girl was born.

The film premiered privately at the White House in May 2016, followed in June by the sold out world premiere at the iconic Paris Theater in New York City. The screening here at the Smith School will be the second time the film has been shown in the Washington, D.C. area. Dream, Girl was recently named the number one “Feminist Film to Watch” by the Huffington Post.

The Dream, Girl movement is dedicated to economically empowering women and girls worldwide, making their most audacious dreams attainable. It celebrates female entrepreneurs, equality, inclusion, support and, of course, dreaming big.

Dream, Girl is presented by the Office of Diversity Initiatives at the Robert H. Smith School of Business in partnership with the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship, the Masters Programs Office and the Office of Marketing Communications.
