Business Honors Serves the Homeless

On Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, Business Honors students at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business partnered with local charity Cup of Joe to pack over 400 breakfast bags for the homeless.

Business Honors Co-Chair Allison Leap helped organize the event: “As a college student, it can be hard to volunteer due to time and transportation constraints. It was great that we could bring the volunteering to Van Munching Hall to create an opportunity for business students to help the homeless!”

Cup of Joe provided juice boxes, fruit cups and other snacks for the bags, and 15 Business Honors students provided the man power while enjoying donuts and coffee in the Undergraduate lounge.

“Cup of Joe was a really fun event that allowed me to meet other Business Honors students while doing meaningful work for the community. It was a great opportunity to give back,” said junior J.T. Bergman.

Melissa Horovitz, also a junior, agreed, “This was a great way to make a difference in the community but also continue to build relationships with some of my peers who I take classes with. I really liked that the event was hands-on, and I think the Cup of Joe mentality to ‘pack with care’ was a great mindset to have.”

Completed breakfast bags were delivered to Adams Place Men’s Shelter in Washington, D.C.
