Barret Rus '20 Builds His Brand

Barret Rus '20 Builds His Brand

Victor Mullins, associate dean of the undergraduate program at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, recently interviewed Smith Freshman Barret Rus ’20 to discuss how he is “building his brand” during his Smith journey. So what does the Smith journey entail? During their freshman year, Smith students begin to build their personal brand through the SmithStart program. Sophomores dedicate their second year to pioneering their path to success by focusing on an overall academic and career strategy. Junior year focuses on students taking command of their careers during to ensure that they are well positioned for their professional journey. Finally, as a senior with an arsenal of tools, knowledge and networks, Smith students are able to embrace their experience and celebrate their success.

Dean Mullins: Reflect on how you are “building your brand” during your freshmen year.

Barret: The past month has been a whirlwind of activity, as I have become extremely involved on campus. I joined two consulting teams through Smith, and through these teams I have learned valuable networking and client interaction skills. I joined the rock-climbing team on campus because I enjoy staying active and testing my abilities. I’ve leveraged the massive Smith network and have interacted with key business leaders in the area. Smith has given me the tools and opportunities that will help guide me down a path to success.

Dean Mullins: What advice would you give to fellow Smith peers?

Barret: Immerse yourself in your passions and enjoy the personal growth process. We all started at Smith not knowing what to expect and we couldn’t wait to get started on our personal journey. We were quickly presented with numerous opportunities and experiences that many other students on campus do not have access to. I encourage my peers to find specific experiences that excite them and put enough effort and time into these experiences to make them not only valuable, but memorable as well.

Dean Mullins: How are you making your mark on campus?

Barret: I am part of UMD’s High Riser program. We host high school seniors and show them around campus for a night. The program is a great way to inform prospective students about the many activities and opportunities available here. It is especially exciting to show prospective business students all the incredible opportunities Smith has to offer.

Dean Mullins: What is your dream?

Barret: My ultimate dream is to be the United States Ambassador to Australia. Australia’s mixture of open wilderness and coastal business hubs has always intrigued me, and I would be dedicated to maintaining a strong relationship between our countries. Before I venture into the realm of politics, I want to work for a Big Three consulting firm, specializing in the industries of energy and financial services. Along the way, I hope to promote life skills’ education in high school classrooms and advocate for electrical grids centered on alternative energy.

Dean Mullins: Why are you passionate about the Smith School?

Barret: Smith is its own community and has definitely made me feel welcome. Nowhere else on campus would I be completely comfortable rocking a full suit on a Friday afternoon for a networking event. Being surrounded by like-minded individuals, who are motivated and career-focused, has helped me elevate my drive to succeed. Smith stands out because it offers unique business school clubs such as consulting groups, it has major-specific societies and we have access to resources such as Smith’s Office of Career Services.
