The Art and Science of the Interview

Undergraduate student Sadia Alao, class of 2020, marketing and theater major, writes about the Acing the Interview event, held on Sept. 4, 2018, at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business.

During Smith Undergraduate Student Association's (SUSA) “Acing the Interview”, employers from Amazon, IBM, EY, Gallo Winery, AT&T, and Geico provided insight on informational and case interviews. Smith students received firsthand tips on how to interact with employers at career fairs. The most compelling advice was offered by Patricia Reich, assistant dean & executive director of career services, who emphasized the importance of storytelling in an interview. She noted how there is a “profound human need to grasp patterns of living.” And she’s right. Hard skills may be the requirement for the job, but soft skills and stories of leadership and value are what will get you the job.
