Abel Dereje Builds His Brand

Abel Dereje Builds His Brand

What does the Smith journey entail? During their freshman year, Smith students begin to build their personal brand through the SmithStart program. Sophomores dedicate their second year to pioneering their path to success by focusing on an overall academic and career strategy. Junior year focuses on students taking command of their careers to ensure that they are well positioned for their professional journey. Finally, as a senior with an arsenal of tools, knowledge and networks, Smith students are able to embrace their experience and celebrate their success.

Victor Mullins, associate dean of the undergraduate program at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, recently spoke to Smith freshman Abel Dereje ’2020 about how he is “building his brand” during his Smith journey.

Dean Mullins: Reflect on how you are “building your brand” during your freshman year.

Dereje: Throughout my freshman year, I have been building my brand by trying to find a parallel between my interests and my career path. I have taken an interest in the financial markets, and because of this I have been attending as many information sessions as possible for the large investment banks. These events have allowed me to establish the foundation for my future, as I have been able to network with recruiters and managing directors from banks such as Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Dean Mullins: What advice would you give to fellow Smith peers?

Dereje: Be as proactive as possible in order to take control of your fate at Smith. At the end of the day, everyone is responsible for his or her own future. Therefore, it is imperative that everyone makes it a mission to take advantage of the opportunities offered, while there is still time to do so. I would advise adopting this mentality as early as possible, in order to create a foundation of success and to make the most out of the Smith journey.

Dean Mullins: How are you making your mark on campus?

Abel: I am making a name for myself on campus by getting active in some of the organizations offered to me. I have been extremely involved with the Smith Business Academy since its first meeting this year, and I have attended meetings for the Finance, Banking & Investment Society as well as the Community of Aspiring Shareholders. Finally, I have been involved with the Maryland Filmmakers Club since the beginning of my first semester, as filmmaking is an immense passion of mine.

Dean Mullins: What is your dream?

Abel: My dream is to produce a film someday. Close at hand with my passion for finance is my passion for filmmaking. I have always loved movies and above all I love a good story. I have produced a short film at the Maryland Filmmakers Club and I would love to be involved in creating a film that hits the big screen and resonates with viewers of all ages.

Dean Mullins: Why are you passionate about the Smith School?

Abel: I am passionate about the Smith School because it has provided me with all the resources I could possibly need to be successful. Furthermore, the staff at the Smith School is great at teaching us how to take advantage of all the resources we have available to us. The commitment of the staff is simply inspiring, and I am truly honored to be here, at the Smith School of Business.
