There are many opportunities to travel during your MBA journey, but it’s the treks that really stand out. Treks are concentrated visits to cities, where you meet with multiple employers to network, check out company offices and explore the surrounding area. Over winter break, our class took a trek to the San Francisco area to meet with Facebook, Uber, Salesforce and many others. The trip really underscored what makes treks such a great opportunity. Making far-flung connections

You’ve probably heard of “the Grand Tour.” It was a key fixture of a higher-level education from the 1500s through the 1800s. The idea of the grand tour was that, near the completion of his formal education, a young man (or woman, in later years) would travel Europe and “learn about the world.”

Now that final exams, group projects, and papers are done for the semester, we’re looking forward to some well-deserved rest and relaxation. So in the spirit of that relaxation, we thought we’d talk about what all the MBA bloggers are looking forward to doing this break. Maybe there are some things on here you’re looking forward to doing too, or maybe you’ll add something new to your list. Miranda Taylor:

As a full-time MBA student, I’ve had the opportunity to interact with students from a variety of MBA programs during the past year and a half. One thing has become clear to me in that time. The Smith MBA is uniquely focused on data. That’s a good thing, because the business world is increasingly reliant on data and analytics. There’s a record need for people with analytical skill and managerial training.

Before joining my first-year cohort at Smith, I had created an infallible 5- and 10-year plan for how my career and professional life would develop. Or so I thought. By February, the plans had changed entirely. That's when I transitioned from planning for a part-time MBA to receiving an opportunity to attend Maryland Smith full-time with a scholarship.

It’s a quintessential University of Maryland love story. Justin Ferguson and Jasmine Snead first met on the University of Maryland College Park campus in 2015. He was studying communications. She was studying political science and African American studies. He liked structure and planning. She liked to decide as she went along.

My first MBA term flew by more quickly than I ever could have anticipated. The number of late nights and long hours spent studying for courses that challenged me over the past few months outnumbered any term I spent in my undergraduate program. I know, without any hesitation, I could not have succeeded without the support from a tight-knit cohort – a cohort filled with people I genuinely enjoy.

Successfully completing a two-year MBA program can be difficult. But when you are expecting a child, the demands on your time can pose even more of a challenge. According to its class profile at University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, the 2019-2020 full-time MBA cohort averages 30 years of age. That means many students are faced with the additional challenge of balancing new additions to their families while going through the program.
