Netherlands University Honors Maryland Smith's Michel Wedel

The University of Groningen in the Netherlands has awarded Maryland Smith marketing professor Michel Wedel the 2019 Ubbo Emmius Medal for science merits. Wedel, a native of the Netherlands, is recognized for his prolific research, particularly his work on eye tracking and visual marketing. He received the award at a ceremony at the University of Groningen on Monday, Sept. 2.

INFORMS Honors Maryland Smith Professor Michel Wedel

Michel Wedel, the PepsiCo Professor of Consumer Science at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, has won the 2019 Buck Weaver Award from the INFORMS Society for Marketing Science. The prize recognizes career achievement in marketing science. Earlier in 2019, Wedel received the Irwin/McGraw-Hill Distinguished Marketing Educator Award, which also recognizes sustained contributions to marketing.

Huang Receives Award at International Conference on Information Systems

Peng Huang, associate professor in the Decisions, Operations and Information Technologies Department at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, received the Best Conference Paper Award at the 2018 International Conference on Information Systems for his research paper, “Does One Size Fit All? Theorizing Governance Configurations for Digital Innovation.” His was selected out of more than 1,200 submissions.

Brookings Institution Appoints Lemma Senbet to Africa Board

Professor Lemma Senbet at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business has been appointed to the Distinguished Advisory Board of the Africa Growth Initiative at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC. “You join a panel of select, high-level policymakers, academics and practitioners on African socio-economic development issues,” Africa Growth Initiative director Brahima S. Coulibaly writes in a March 7, 2019, letter to Senbet.

Maryland Smith Researchers Receive Journal of Marketing Award

Maryland Smith's Xian Gu, P.K. Kannan and Liye Ma, have been selected as a finalist for the 2018 Marketing Science Institute/H. Paul Root Award for their research paper, "Selling the Premium in Freemium." The award is given to a paper published in the Journal of Marketing that has made a significant contribution to the advancement of the practice of marketing in a calendar year.

Kannan's Paper Selected for Journal of Marketing Award

P.K. Kannan's paper, “The Informational Value of Social Tagging Networks,” has been selected as a finalist for the 2019 Sheth Foundation/Journal of Marketing Award. This award honors the best article published in the Journal of Marketing that has made long-term contributions to the field of marketing. An article will be eligible for consideration to receive this award in the fifth year after its publication.

Maryland Smith Claims Second Spot On Premier AMA Journals List

The 2018 Marketing Research Productivity Lists, which track top individual and institutional contributors to the premier journals, show that the University of Maryland jumped to the second spot on the premier AMA journals list. Maryland also entered the top five institutions on the premier journals list. It is the first public university to be in the top five since 2015 and the first U.S.-based public university since 2013. 

American Psychological Association Honors Hui Liao

Hui Liao, the endowed Smith Dean’s Professor in Leadership and Management at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, has been selected as a fellow by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. “This prestigious honor is in recognition of outstanding accomplishments in the profession of industrial and organizational psychology and is awarded to only a few select recipients,” the fellowship committee wrote in its notification letter.

The Department of Decision, Operations & Information Technologies at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business has been selected as a finalist for the 2019 UPS George D. Smith Prize.

Marketing Professor Michel Wedel Earns Career Achievement Award

Michel Wedel, a marketing professor from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, will receive a career achievement award on Feb. 23, 2019, at the American Marketing Association Winter Academic Conference in Austin, Texas. The Irwin/McGraw-Hill Distinguished Marketing Educator Award recognizes sustained contributions to marketing over an extended period of time. Only 35 educators have received the honor since the inaugural presentation in 1985.
