Disney Executive Joe Welch Shares Insights on Building a Global Career

Disney executive Joe Welch encouraged Smith School students to explore careers across industries and sectors during a fireside chat. He discussed global business challenges and highlighted Disney internships, cultural exchange programs and a fellowship in public policy.

What does it take to build a career in a world where business, government, technology and geopolitics increasingly intersect?

Smith School students explored that question with Joe Welch, vice president of global public policy at the Walt Disney Co., during a Sept. 22, 2026, fireside chat hosted by the Center for Global Business at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business as part of the Careers Crossing Borders series.

In conversation with the center’s executive director, Rebecca Bellinger, and academic director, Kislaya Prasad, Welch shared perspectives from his global career and explored how major forces shaping the international business environment are creating new opportunities and challenges for the next generation of business leaders.

Welch also described the complexities a global entertainment company faces in today’s evolving business environment. Disney reaches audiences in more than 130 markets through businesses and brands including ABC, ESPN and Disney+, while its theme parks and cruise lines operate across multiple regions. At the same time, Disney competes with other global entertainment companies for audiences whose entertainment choices increasingly cross borders.

Welch encouraged students to think beyond a single industry or career path. His own journey — from teaching English in Thailand to working at the Federal Communications Commission and then in global public policy at Disney — demonstrates that careers can take unexpected turns and develop across disciplines and sectors.

Before closing, Welch encouraged students to explore opportunities to gain experience with Disney. He pointed students toward Disney Careers, as well as opportunities specifically designed for students and recent graduates, including the Disney College Program, internships and rotational programs. He also highlighted Disney International Programs, which offer work and cultural exchange opportunities, and Disney’s LinkedIn page for current vacancies and early-career opportunities.

For students interested in the intersection of business and public policy, Welch also highlighted Public Policy New Voices, a Disney-sponsored fellowship program.
