There’s a new gallery of 16 LED screens lining a prominent hallway on the first floor of Van Munching Hall, showing off some of the Smith School’s most illustrious alumni. The vertical screens rotate through photos and short bios of dozens of impressive graduates, donors and school champions. The entire display can also be quickly adapted to highlight specific groups — for example, individuals in specific industries, or graduates of a particular program.

Van Munching Hall now features advanced upgrades, including a virtual teaching studio and active learning classrooms. Paulo Prochno, clinical professor, highlights the studio’s immersive technology, enabling online courses to feel like in-person teaching for enhanced student learning experiences.

Albert "Ab" Krall '81, a dedicated supporter of Smith School since 1983, recently invested $750,000 for a new active learning classroom. Krall, an executive in residence, emphasizes experiential learning in his teaching.

Smith School Dean Prabhudev Konana is transforming learning with technological upgrades in Van Munching Hall, including new active-learning classrooms and a cutting-edge virtual teaching studio to support global remote learners.

The Smith School is making way for new, more effective venues for student collaboration. Follow our progress as we work towards our goal of opening these new spaces in 2024.

Now that UMD’s School of Public Policy has moved out of Van Munching Hall for new digs across campus, the Smith School has the go-ahead from the university to take over the vacated wing of the building.
