When appointed as the University of Maryland president in 2010, Wallace Loh inspired the greater Maryland community with his challenge to “Lead Fearlessly.” Now, 10 years later, Loh is stepping down as president and entrusting future generations of Terps to continue the work he began.

Delicately balancing data privacy and public health concerns amid the coronavirus pandemic have created roadblocks for accurate contact tracing around the world. But two recent Maryland Smith graduates are hoping to be part of the solution. When tasked with a project on leveraging big data, master’s students Laura Klett, MFin ’20, and Gabriel Castro, MFin ’20, realized they shared a mutual interest in improving current contact tracing methods. They teamed up to find a way to positively impact their local communities.

As they celebrated their graduation from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, six students reflected on what the moment – and the achievement – mean to them. Here is what they said:

The University of Maryland is actively monitoring the outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus (termed “COVID-19”) that was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. Very rapidly, the virus has been detected in numerous countries including the United States.

USM Ends Search, Calling Clark School Dean ‘Precisely the Right Person’ for Role By Maryland Today Staff  The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents yesterday appointed Darryll J. Pines, dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering, as the 34th president of the University of Maryland, effective July 1.

With 65 publications over the past five years in elite management journals, the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is fifth among U.S. business schools in the latest Texas A&M/University of Georgia Rankings (TAMUGA) of Management Department Research Productivity.
