Smith’s Strategic Design Fellows Team Finishes Third in AMA Competition
A Strategic Design Fellows team representing the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business tied for third place in the recent American Marketing Association (AMA) International Collegiate Case Competition sponsored by the Wall Street Journal. The Smith team was among 10 selected (from 78 teams submitting cases) for the competition held in early April in New Orleans.

Listening to Fellow Students’ Needs
It was September 2021 and Ayelette Halbfinger ’23, was struggling. “I suffer from hearing loss and have since I was a little kid,” she says. “However, I never really felt like I needed academic accommodation until I was thrown into an environment where everyone in class was wearing a mask and microphones weren’t working all the time.” Halbfinger, now a senior finance and operations management and business analytics major, says her studies suffered.

Smith School of Business among 19 University of Maryland graduating seniors recently recognized as Philip Merrill Presidential Scholars for their accomplishments, prestigious internships and GPAs. The recognition includes the scholars’ faculty and K-12-teacher mentors.
Bridging Disciplines a Focus of New Smith Interim Associate Dean
Joseph Bailey recalls plotting an electrical engineering career path while growing up in northern New Jersey. Subsequent study at Carnegie Mellon led him to explore that field in a public policy context at Stanford. Then at MIT, he added telecommunications to the mix and co-authored the seminal 1995 book “Internet Economics.”
