For seven years, the Smith Business Academy, designed for black and Latino men; and the Women’s Empowerment Institute, its female counterpart, have provided a supportive community of like-minded peers to help thwart incongruence in academic achievement experienced at many predominantly white institutions (PWI).

Students Savor a Break, With Pancakes During Stacks on Smith

On December 10, 2019, Maryland Smith hosted Stacks on Smith, a night for students to relax during finals week and enjoy a pancake breakfast. Launched in 2013 by the Dean’s Student Advisory Council (DSAC), Stacks on Smith began as a way to help promote community unity and establish new Smith School traditions. For students like Ned Engelbride ’20, a finance major, the event presents an ideal setting to interact with both peers and professors during a busy period in the semester. 

Maryland Smith’s Winter Commencement is Dec. 18

Join the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business in celebrating the accomplishments of its graduates, during Winter Commencement starting 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2019, at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Md. Tickets are not required for the ceremony, which also will be streamed live.

Thanksgiving Holiday Pairing

The Smith School's diversity & inclusion committee is hosting a Thanksgiving pairing program. Faculty, staff, and local alumni are invited to “Share Your Table” and host an international student, or an out-of-state student who can’t go home for the holiday. Students who want to celebrate Thanksgiving with a faculty, staff or alumni, are invited to “Be Our Guest.” The Smith School is committed to fostering a culture of unity and this program is one way that we are connecting people together. The deadline to express your interest in participating is November 15.

Students and alumni celebrated Latinx Heritage Month with music, food and cultural performances on Oct. 3, 2019, at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. The event was organized by the Maryland Smith chapter of the Association of Latino Professionals for America.

Snider Enterprise and Leadership Fellows

Undergraduate student Jason Woods, class of 2022, majoring in marketing, writes about the Snider Enterprise and Leadership Fellows program. The difference between a person that simply succeeds and a person that thrives is small; it comes down to a few key aspects that aren’t taught in classrooms. Whether or not a person lands the position they’ve always dreamed of or settles for something less than ideal is a matter of knowing themselves, being motivated, and embracing challenge as much as it is having the technical know-how for the position.

Smith Donors Load Baltimore Ravens Bookmobile

Donors helped load the Maryland Book Bank Bookmobile on June 15, 2019, following a semester-long book drive organized by a team of working professionals in the Executive MBA program at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.
