GMA Speaker Series Gets off to a Dynamic Start with Anthony Pappas

The first Graduate Marketing Association (GMA) event of the semester kicked off on Feb. 13, 2008 in Van Munching Hall with a presentation from Anthony Pappas, president and creative director of the Pappas Group. Around 40 MBA students and faculty attended the presentation, entitled "The Business of Branding: How Creative Efforts Meet Corporate Goals."

Business Schools Roland Rust Awarded University of Maryland's Highest Faculty Honor

College Park, Md. November 21, 2007 Marketing faculty at the University of Marylands Robert H. Smith School of Business recently received honors for top research influencing business practices. P.K. Kannan, the Harvey Sanders Associate Professor of Marketing, and department chair Roland Rust, the David Bruce Smith Chair in Marketing, were each recognized for separate projects. Kannan won the 2007 INFORMS Society on Marketing Science Practice Prize competition. Rusts research won the Best Article Award from the Journal of Service Research.

Mattel Senior VP Speaks to Smith Undergraduates About Living Brands

Smith undergraduate students were treated to a presentation by Richard Dickson -- Mattel Brands senior vice president of marketing, media and entertainment, worldwide -- on Oct. 23, 2007 in Van Munching Hall. Dickson graduated from Maryland with a degree in consumer economics and was excited to be back. Prior to joining Mattel, Dickson spent over 15 years in the fashion and beauty industry working with top names in retail and design at Bloomingdales and Este Lauder.

Smith Boasts Six INFORMS Fellows

Michael Fu, professor of management science, and Lawrence Bodin, professor emeritus of management science, have been named as fellows for 2008 by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). This singular honor, awarded to about 2 percent of the organizations 11,000 members, has now been held by six members of the Smith Schools decision and information technologies department.

Smith MBA Takes Third Place in Simon Marketing Case Competition

Congratulations to first-year Smith MBA Donald Wood who, along with a team of students from business schools across the United States, won third place in the annual Simon Marketing Case Competition. The third-place team split $1,000 in prize money. Sponsored by Heineken USA, the event was held March 20 and 31, 2007 at the University of Rochester's Simon School of Business in the state of New York.
