“Enthusiastically go after every single day.” This was the message of BB&T Chairman and CEO Kelly King’s Nov. 6 CEO@Smith presentation at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. “Passion causes us to give it our all. Be passionate and purposeful about life – you can make a difference.”

Samuel Blum ’13 is one lucky dog. He’s hitting the road this year as one of 12 Oscar Mayer Hotdoggers, driving the company’s iconic Wienermobile from sea to shining sea. 

What I do: Global co-head of government affairs at Goldman Sachs. “I manage the firm’s public policy and government relations worldwide — the ways we interact with governments, particularly on regulatory issues that affect the firm.”

This summer, Smith joined the ranks of other LEADing business schools. From July 14 to Aug. 1, the Smith School hosted the first Leadership, Education and Development (LEAD) program, bringing 30 minority students from across the nation to Van Munching Hall to learn more about business. The program was designed to increase the number of underrepresented minority students who graduate with a business degree.

The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business welcomed 100 young women from nearby high schools in Prince George’s, Montgomery and Howard Counties to the Future Women in Business Conference on October 19, 2013. Hosted by the Smith School Women’s Society and sponsored by PwC, this conference encouraged high school girls to explore an undergraduate degree and future career in business. Guests heard from keynote speaker Melanie Thomas Armstrong, a partner in PwC's Public Sector Practice (PSP), and were encouraged to “Seize Your Future!” 

For the past five years, undergraduate students from adjunct professor Joe Rinaldi’s Futures, Options and Derivatives class at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business have attended the Barron’s Roundtable to rub elbows with some of the top investors in the country.  This year, six students attended the conference, titled “The Art of Successful Investing” on October 21, 2013 at the Metropolitan Club in New York City: 

As part of the Global Fellows Program at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, three groups of undergraduate students got the unique opportunity to play the role of professional consultants last week, pitching real-life business solutions to an international non-profit organization. The experience is part of a course for Global Fellows – BMGT 468P “Practicum in Global Consulting” – that offers students the chance to partner directly with a global organization in an effort to develop effective and executable new business strategies.

For the second year in a row, undergraduates from the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business took top honors at the University of Connecticut’s Case Challenge, hosted by Connecticut’s Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) from October 9-13, 2013 in Storrs, Connecticut.  Raaheela Ahmed, a junior finance and economics double major; Ben Hsieh, a junior accounting major; and Ningwei Li, a junior finance, economics, and mathematics triple major; represented Smith at the Case Challenge.
