Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh to deliver Happiness talk at the University of Maryland, Stamp Student Union

The Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship will host Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com, on Thursday, Sept. 30, 7 p.m. in the Hoff Theater, Stamp Student Union at the University of Maryland. Hsieh will discuss his new book, “Delivering Happiness,” which shows how using happiness as a framework can produce profits, passion and purpose both in business and in life.

Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship Celebrates 25 Years

The Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship began its year-long 25th anniversary celebration on September 21, 2010 with a day of festivities concluded by a keynote address from University of Maryland alumnus Michael Dingman, the entrepreneur-philanthropist whose gift helped transform the center into a world-class entrepreneurial institute with a worldwide reach.

Support student entrepreneurs at the Terp Marketplace!

On Sept. 21, 2010, from noon until 4 p.m., theDingman Center for Entrepreneurship will be hosting Terp Marketplace, an event that draws student entrepreneurs to the Robert H. Smith School of Business in Van Munching Hall to sell their wares and promote their businesses. Last year’s marketplace was a huge success, with students selling products ranging including business card holders, scarves, purses, and jewelry.

Get Ready for Spring Break & Support Student Entrepreneurs!

On Wed., March 10, the Smith School and the Maryland Undergraduate Society of Entrepreneurs will host a "Marketplace" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Van Munching Hall's Pownall Grand Atrium. The event showcases student-run businesses and Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship portfolio companies that will make their various products available for purchase to the general university population.

Smith School Store Open for Business

Students at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, are getting first-hand experience in becoming entrepreneurs by working and running the Smith Store. Kevin Kirk, a junior supply chain and finance major at the Smith School, said working for the Smith Store is great because “you get to really learn how the run a business. It’s really cool to learn, but isn’t without bumps.” Located on the first floor of Van Munching Hall in room 1409, the student-run Smith Store sells Smith School apparel and other Smith brand goods.

Technology Transfer

Washington, D.C. and Baltimore were both recently named among the top 10 best cities to launch a business (No. 6 and No. 10, respectively) by Fortune Small Business magazine and the Kauffman Foundation. With the Baltimore-Washington region so ripe for startups, it’s no wonder the state of Maryland is supporting technology transfer initiatives to get commercialize research innovations discovered at universities and federal laboratories.
