Warren Buffett’s decision to step down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway marks a highly consequential leadership transition in modern business — and few observers are better positioned to interpret its significance than Clinical Professor of Finance David Kass at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.
Kass has tracked Berkshire for decades, attended private student meetings with Buffett, and chronicled every development on his long-running Warren Buffett Blog.
Friday’s announcement formalizes the next step in Berkshire’s succession plan: Buffett, 96, becomes chairman emeritus while his son Howard assumes the chairmanship and Greg Abel continues as CEO. Kass notes that Buffett’s shareholder letter — including the line “Father time always wins” — underscores the gravity of the moment and signals a transition long in motion.
Kass points out that Berkshire has “substantially underperformed the S&P 500 since Buffett announced he was stepping down as CEO” last year. As a result, he believes the long-standing “Buffett premium” — the market’s confidence in Buffett’s unparalleled capital allocation — has likely faded.
Still, Kass sees stability ahead. Berkshire’s decentralized model, he says, is “very likely to maintain its control under Greg Abel and Howard Buffett,” with Abel poised to lead effectively. “Berkshire should perform very well going forward under the leadership of Greg Abel,” Kass says.
As described in a recent Terp Magazine profile, Kass’s perspective is shaped by years of firsthand experience — from annual treks to “Woodstock for capitalists” to front-row moments at historic shareholder meetings. His office, lined with photos and personal notes from Buffett, reflects a scholar who has spent a career studying not just Berkshire’s strategy but its culture.
