Smith Welcomes 21 New PhD Candidates

The Robert H. Smith School of Business is pleased to announce the addition of 21 new PhD candidates in fall 2004, bringing the total number of students in the doctoral program to 115. This years students come to Smith from the United States as well as India, Turkey, China, Canada, Israel, Brazil, Singapore, and Taiwan.

The Smith School attracts the best and brightest PhD students from around the world, says Lawrence A. Gordon, director of the PhD program and Ernst & Young Alumni Professor of Managerial Accounting and Information Assurance. These students have access to some of the best faculty in their fields, and a key aspect of the PhD program is the emphasis on close working relationships among faculty and students.

Smiths reputation for producing cutting-edge researchand cutting edge researchers means that Smith School PhDs are in demand at business schools around the world. Over the past five years, 99% of Smiths Ph.D. students have been successfully placed directly after they graduateabout 80% as tenure track assistant professors at an accredited university, and about 19% as researchers in either private or governmental organizations. PhD graduates of the Smith School are in high demand, says Gordon. Many receive offers to join the faculty of top-ranked universities.
