Ground your feet. Relax your hands into a resting position. Center yourself. Breathe.  Then begin. I was never someone who struggled with public speaking. I grew up in my local community theatre and immediately loved the stage.

Let’s face it, the ultimate goal for completing your MBA is to get a job; not just any job, but the job of your dreams. To get that, you need a knockout resume – that one singular, sheet of paper that showcases all the expertise you’ve gained throughout your life and career, and highlights why you’d be the perfect candidate for the position. How can you make your resume standout from the rest? Here are three important tips I’ve learned:

Career conferences are an integral part of the internship and job searching process. The first big one to hit this year was National Black MBA Conference in Houston. I made the trek down there to bask in the humidity and career opportunities. Here’s what I learned. Apply to jobs ahead of time

I wrote previously about the journey to realizing the MBA was the right degree for me. Even with the thought and intentionality behind my decision, I've spent the first several weeks of my first semester relearning what exactly goes into learning. Beyond the obvious things like exams and team assignments (yes, group work follows you beyond undergrad), learning the little things that accompany being a student again has been its own, distinct bit of coursework.

A Case for Liberal Arts in the MBA

In classes taught by Shreevardhan Lele at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, lines blur between business strategy and philosophical dilemmas, and that’s the way his students prefer it. From security strategy to history to law — Lele imparts critical decision making skills that apply to many fields. “He has this knowledge about history, philosophy and politics that makes our experience in the class extremely rich,” says Ryan French, a second-year MBA student at Maryland Smith.

Don’t worry, the fall season isn’t over yet. Last week, I caught up with an old friend. Despite travel, a new position at work and countless other things going on, she had time to talk. And somehow, miraculously, she thought to call. Life can be hectic in a full-time MBA program. You have more work than time. And your job hunt can be all-consuming if you let it be. MBA students know it’s important to take time to relax. But we’re also acutely aware that doing so can come at the expense of something else that needs to be accomplished.

It’s no secret that gender diversity in corporate board rooms is lacking. Did you know only 22 percent of Fortune 500 board members are women? That’s why women in B-school should start thinking about corporate board membership now — early or midway through their careers.

Among the many essential things you’ll learn as an MBA is how to put your best foot forward in a job interview. You’ll get expert advice and mentoring, as well as access to a ton of resources. I recently attended a two-day workshop focusing on the first interview. It was full of great info. Here were the takeaways I found most useful. Have a bank of stories for all different skills

Back to school – the very phrase can seem a bit intimidating when you’ve been away from academia for a few years. Back to school for an MBA – that’s more intimidating yet. There are a lot of demands on the MBA student, and seemingly endless tasks, deadlines and responsibilities to keep track of. In my professional life, I’ve always been organized, efficient and on a highly intimate basis with my calendar app. But when I enrolled in an MBA program, I knew I’d need more than an app.
