Talented High School Students Enjoy Maryland Marquee Day

On Sept. 16, 2017, talented high school students flooded Van Munching Hall on Maryland Marquee Day. This day showcased the different opportunities that prospective business majors could take advantage of if they enrolled in the Robert H. Smith School of Business. The students and their parents filed in Tyser Auditorium and sat in front of the Smith School Ambassadors, who presented slides describing the Smith experience. The presentation included information about various resources in the business school, internship opportunities, study abroad, and more. Each ambassador added their own personal story about their time at Smith, which made the presentation feel more personal and reflective of their love for their school.

These potential business school students seemed exceptionally interested in the different programs offered for freshmen such as the Honors College, College Park Scholars and different living and learning programs. After learning about these opportunities during the presentation, the students were separated from their parents and broke up into two small group discussions. There, the Smith Ambassadors answered any questions the high school students had, ranging from describing their best experiences in Smith, to any advice for potential college students. One student asked, “what were you surprised about when you came into the business school?” and the group's consensus answer was a number of opportunities Smith students are given every day. “There are employers and amazing faculty resources here every day, it was honestly surprising how comfortable you get with professionals if coming to Smith,” said Nikhil Modi, sophomore business undecided major.

Smith was recently ranked 21st best undergraduate business program by the 2018 U.S. News & World Report, and 11th best among public universities. It will be interesting to see who of these bright high schoolers will add to the greatness of Smith.
