Smith Welcomes New Management and Operations Executive-in-Residence Chip Pickett

The Smith School’s management and operations department is pleased to welcome George “Chip” Pickett as an executive-in-residence. A defense and aerospace industry veteran – having held key strategic roles in both the private and public sectors – Pickett is no stranger to sharing his expertise in an academic environment and is currently writing a book about the application of business strategy in defense companies.

Most recently Pickett retired as a vice president from the Northrop Grumman Corporation after serving 21 years in various positions involving long range forecasting, defense strategy analysis, business strategy formulation and long range planning. Prior to joining Northrop Grumman Corporation his background included serving as an active duty military officer for 12 years, working in the White House’s National Security Commission and Office of the Secretary of Defense; and holding staff positions for defense intelligence programs in the Senate Intelligence Committee. Pickett has also held positions with Booz Allen Hamilton and MITRE Corporation.

While at Northrop Grumman, Pickett’s accomplishments included teaching business strategy and marketing to more than a thousand managers and engineers. He has led studies and lectured in the military services and military universities on innovation, the evolution of the defense industry and the future national security environment. He has a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
